Top New York wedding photographer Laurie Rhodes Photographs the Lunar New Year in Chinatown #1

One of the many celebrations that I absolutely love is the Lunar New Year in Manhattan’s China Town.

If you’ve been you know that there are constant explosions of confetti high into the air. One of the challenges of photography is to somehow encapsulate a multi-sensory experience into a two dimensional visual format.

This day I was shooting with my favorite camera, the M9 Rangefinder with a 50mm Noctilux lens, (1.0).

After many attempts photographing from a low vantage point up into the air, while experimenting with my depth of field to blur out the background, and at the same time to keep enough of the confetti in focus for the viewer to experience the impact, I was frustrated. I wanted the color and volume of the confetti to reign supreme. I laid my camera on the ground with the piles of exhausted confetti in the foreground with the revelers in the background. Shown here is that image as well as my favorite of the image shot from a low vantage point.
